Casa Lilly

There’s one woman- she’s the girlfriend, the mistress, or the “other woman”. And even though he has twenty years on her, she is the one who runs the house as a Sergeant and treats paying residents, including him, as her non-commissioned officers. She dwells in the kitchen, but is heard throughout the house with the loud shuffle of her Ugg boots that slap the floor with every step as she marches from room to room. She demands attention at every encounter with sassy commands given in her aggressively raspy voice. She flips around her thick black Chilean hair, which reaches the waistband of her loudly-printed tights, as though her head of hair were a fan and she- a Victorian lady. And like a Victorian lady, she receives lots of attention from both men and women, until he enters the room enraged and grabs her violently, as a proper Victorian male should, and kisses her so aggressively that the swarm of admirers quickly dissipates like a cloud of smoke.

There’s another woman- she’s the mother of his three children and possibly his same age even though her tired eyes and chapped working hands indicate otherwise. She actually owns the house that the other woman stomps through, but is spotted seldomly as she inhabits the chicken coop in the backyard where she takes care of his young children and keeps them quiet and out of everyone’s hair… especially out of the kitchen where they will inevitably meet the other woman who greets them with a strained voice, which is made in attempts to sound cheerful. The toddlers instantly identify her phoniness, as children often so easily do, and they are incapable of hiding their disgust for the woman guilty of pushing them out of their home. And so, the wife and mother of his children remains quietly in the backyard with two small yappy “guard” dogs as companions whose fur that was once white has now turned a dirt brown.

Then there is a third woman. She comes and goes. She comes with nothing, but when she goes, she takes everything. She is perceived as being vulnerable… so vulnerable that she receives help and guidance from both other women. One woman offers her a bed in the chicken coop- not thinking twice as she relocates her three small children from their already tiny room into her own single bed. The other woman makes her biscuits and mate… she calms her nerves and reassures her saying, “Lilly, everything will be okay”.
